Azalea's Torment
A downloadable game
Azalea’s Torment is a Fantasy Action & Adventure RPG game, with common themes of loss, acceptance and eventually redemption. It shows how, upon finding and understanding yourself, the world begins to make more sense.
The main concept of the game has you, the player, explore the realm as Azalea – a tree-elf/human half breed - completing quests and tasks set by those she meets and the things she confronts. Her journey consists of learning the truth about herself, the land and the people she surrounds herself with.
We’ve taken inspiration from many different sources – each of which has helped us develop something within the game. Games like For The King and Equilinox for the low poly art direction, Borderlands 2 for mechanics such as skill trees, Magicka and League of Legends for perspective as well as Skyrim and Witcher 3 for genre conventions. Each of these have been successful in their implementation of these features, therefore we have a solid basis to form or game on.
There is a wide array of things that will separate our game from the rest. Firstly, story that unravels as you traverse the world; allowing yourself and the character to understand the truth behind the motive of events. The leading force, the protagonist, takes you on a journey of self-discovery and acceptance. Then, a low poly art direction is used for this fantasy adventure RPG to create a friendly aesthetic for an otherwise dark game – providing a perfect contrast to create a new experience.
In terms of mechanics, the combat presented in the game utilizes skill trees to provide a progressive learning, leveling and difficulty curve; allowing the use of different weapons when you have reached a certain level. You must work to use the more powerful weapons against the more dangerous enemies. There is also a semi-isometric, third person perspective in this 3D adventure game to provide you with a great view of the beautifully crafted surroundings, as well as a view of the character model from all angles.
As the game is an RPG, there can’t be a story that is too constrictive; therefore, it instead provides a motive to play – working heavily on backstory and set-up information to kick-start you in the game. In the game world of elves and dwarves, a Princess of the human society becomes an outcast by her sudden affliction and must survive in the dangerous land below. There she encounters some of the most terrifying creatures and treacherous quests, but she must continue to reclaim what is hers.
The mechanics of the game follow similar conventions to that of the adventure and RPG genre, however with our own twist to keep the features fresh. As Azalea acquires more experience through exploring the open world, completing quests and battling the threats she comes across, she learns more of the art of combat – the key mechanic in the game. Not only can you use a multitude of weapons in accordance with your stats and attributes; but Azalea's new-found abilities let her to turn the tide of battle by allowing you to use her Elven magic to channel both offensive and defensive spells.
All of this can be accessed through your inventory – letting you swap your items in and out, manage your skill progression, as well as equip armor to protect yourself. The quest system follows a path to the end of the game, but many let you decide which order you do them in – this can mean every person that plays this has a different experience than you. All of this, combined with the ability to walk around the very diverse game world, creates a sense of adventure and independence, you control your progression and what path you go down – all the way to the end.
